Idaho Senate Republicans Pass Historic Tax Relief Bill

BOISE, IDAHO - Today, Idaho Senate Republicans voted to pass H436 -- the largest income tax cut in Idaho history that also includes a one-time rebate to Idaho taxpayers. The move to reduce and return taxes follows record tax revenue collection by the State of Idaho from a growing Idaho economy. Senate Democrats, in cooperation with Senator Christy Zito (LD-23), attempted to derail passage of the income tax cut hoping to change the bill. Senate Democrats argued that instead of providing income tax cuts, the state should spend more money on other government programs. H436 reduces income taxes for all Idahoans. Opponents of H436 debated against income tax reduction and instead chose to focus on repealing sales tax on some groceries. Idaho Senate Republicans support grocery sales tax relief and current income tax credits offset grocery sales tax for all Idahoans. Senate Republicans will be advancing legislation the session to provide more grocery tax credit relief. The 2022 Public Policy Survey conducted by Boise State University shows that most Idahoans favor income tax reduction over sales tax reduction. The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk. ### The Idaho Senate Majority Caucus is led by President Pro Tempore, Senator Chuck Winder representing LD-20; Majority Leader, Senator Kelly Anthon representing LD-27; Assistant Majority Leader, Senator Abby Lee representing LD-9; and, Majority Caucus Chair, Senator Mark Harris, representing LD-32.
